doma architects have fun making models

We have been asked to prepare a model of our "Food for thought" scheme for Forgotten Spaces Sheffield. This will appear next to images of our scheme design at the upcoming exhibition of the shortlisted entries that will be held at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

At doma architects, we LOVE making models, so fully relished this opportunity!

James found a "plug-in" for Sketch-Up called Flattery which deconstructs your Google Sketch-Up model by literally unfolding all the faces onto a flat plane. This could then be printed out on a sheet of paper, which we spray mounted onto the card or copper sheeting, which were then reconstructed in the physical model. It made things so simple, quick, and more importantly, accurate!

Please see below a picture gallery of the construction process of various parts of the model.

The chimney was constructed out of card and then wrapped with the copper sheeting. We used "Amaco Art Emboss" copper which was really malleable, and great to work with. We scored the sheeting with a blunt scalpal to give the impression of vertical standing seams.

The modern intervention enclosed within a new opening in the facade of the small mill building, expresses the location of the cafe. The timber terrace cantilevers out over the park. The model expresses the importance of opening the building up to Millhouses Park.

The small bakery building has a fairly complicated form. However, the use of the Google "Flattery" software simplified the process significantly.
